This feature is reserved for harder difficulties.

Equipment can be destroyed, or run out batteries/charge, don't worry though, players will be able to pack extra batteries and basecamps can provide charging capabilities.

Players can also repair certain pieces of equipment, which costs less than replacing it, but of course, players can just buy new equipment if they don't want the hassle.
